Woah, okay, we got a problem! A real big problem!

[The camera at first is awfully shaky, but it's soon clear enough that Morph is outside - and on the nearly-destroyed roof of the X-Mansion, given that the camera passes over a view of a couple of caved-in rooms from above before uprighting itself to focus on the horizon.

The view of the treeline so soon after dawn would probably be more lovely if it weren't for the growing plume of smoke.]

D'you see that?!

[The camera zooms in close enough now to show the suspicious glow in the near-distance, and the dark plume of smoke in more detail. Morph sounds panicked, but they're also slurring their words, more than someone who's just woken up should be doing.]

That's the training grounds... lots of trees around there. I'm gonna check it out, but I need... I need a minute.

[Now they sound distinctly queasy. Oops.]

[still not fully getting the hang of the video function of these devices, the feed wavers and goes out of focus for a second or two — until this little hut is revealed:]

IMAGE INSIDE! )

[it's unclear (unless you know the username of this broadcast) who is behind the camera, until the video comes a bird's eye view of this decorative little shack.]

Well, that's right good, innit? It might be gettin' hot as Hades, but I reckon this is the best time for it!

[floating back down on ground level, rogue twists the camera to face herself now with her new accomplishment behind her, grinning fairly big.]

I've been meaning to do somethin' like this for ya'll. Now I ain't licensed or nothing, but part of my powers is all about knowing exactly how ya'll are feeling on the inside. But instead of touchin' and learning it the mutant way, I'd like it more if you tell me on your own.

[there's a brief pause from her, and her voice sombers when she speaks again:]

I know we've all been tossed in Hell, out, and back again, and it gets harder to tell our loved ones how we feel about things, and sometimes we think it'd be better to say nothing at all. Keep it all bottled up and have it all twisting and turning 'till you get a crick in your neck. But lettin' it fester can lead to trouble, and Lord knows, we don't need more of that around these parts.

— It's good to let it all out, but more in a healthy way. And that's what I'm here for. 'Cuz sometimes, it's easier to say things to someone who don't know a flippin' thing about ya.

[the mutant makes her way inside her therapy hut and plops a seat on one of the chairs, sitting more upright to look professional.]

I'm a lil' out yonder from the city, out in the fields. And there's no charge. Not gonna make ya'll pay when all I want is for everyone to feel better themselves and getting along.

And if that's not enough to rope ya in, I'm one hell of a cook, and I'm fixin' to start grilling some burgers and hot dogs in a little while.

[Scott's been feeling all kinds of ways since returning to Aldrip. A little off his feet? Not upset exactly, not when he remembers everyone important to him, but it's still a lot. Kind of weird that he's actually older here than back home, and that's not mentioning suddenly getting almost two years of memories shoved inside his head that he completely forgot about until now. But he's trying. A part of him wants to just lie on the bed with Kotone and just take more time to himself, but he figures that he should say something to his friends.

Maybe focusing on them will help. Better than thinking about Alex or how Apocalypse sort of ruined everything back home.

He breathes in, fiddling with his tablet. Something in him wants to change his username from 'shades' to 'cyclops,' but maybe not right now.]

hey, i'm back now. sorry if i worried anyone. a lot happened, like, back home. yeah i went home and came back. i'm okay though.

[None of that sounded super awkward, right.]

if you wanna meet up, i'll be at the diner. you're paying though.

But today he'll make a post because he can't sleep and he's not sure who to talk to besides the void that is this network. ]

Have you ever thought about...a choice you've made back home and wanted to change it? Something you did for yourself or something you did for someone else? How things might be different or just happen another way because of it.

Maybe a different choice could have made all the difference. Or maybe it wouldn't have mattered at all.
[ A pause before another message comes. ]

Then I think that maybe changing something about myself would give me the answers that I wanted. Maybe if I wasn't who I was back then and hadn't reacted the way that I did, chosen differently in the way I went about things, it could have ended differently. [ But, ah, reading all of this now. This is depressing, huh? Sorry Aldrip. ]

Sorry! I type things without realizing it sometimes, it's a habit. Feel free to ignore this!

So, catching up with everyone:

-The AI is in Quentin's brain and he can't access that part of his mind anymore.

-There's a tiny Phoenix inside me, no, I'm not possessed yet.

-Kurt's been sentenced and showing side effects of it, namely, turning into stone.

I feel that we all should discuss these things. Or at least, be aware of it. Also, Morph, Rogue, got anything to share? Might as well add to the list.

I know some of us have been feeling unsettled since the world was "reset." The thought that maybe nothing here is real isn't easy to wrap your arms around. You start to question everything: every action, every decision, every bond you’ve formed. You wonder if it matters. You wonder what it means.

And I'm not going to tell you that there's any one answer to that. On earth, there have been philosophers since at least the seventeenth century who've grappled with questions like this, without coming to any firm conclusions.

In his Meditations on First Philosophy, René Descartes laid out the Evil Demon Hypothesis as a sort of epistemological experiment. Descartes imagines a powerful demon that creates an illusion of an external world so indistinguishable from reality that it could make Descartes believe he was sitting by a fire, even though he wasn't. As the existence of a simulation indistinguishable from reality is unfalsifiable, Descartes concluded that the foundation of all knowledge - the only thing that could not be doubted -- is the existence of the self. Most famously expressed by his statement "I think, therefore I am."

Since then, versions of the same thought experiment have popped up. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the idea that all reality is a simulation gained some traction. First by philosophers and epistemologists, later by scientists, then by whatever Elon Musk was.

But the further down the chain you got, the more divorced from the original purpose of the thought experiment it became. Cartesian skepticism was a way to pick out fundamental truths about the nature of knowledge itself. To show that reality is experienced subjectively, that our senses are not always reliable, and there are few things that we can know with absolute certainty. That our observations may be dubious, but the existence of the observer is unimpeachable.

One thing you can take away from that idea -- what some people do take away from it -- is solipsism. Solipsism, as a philosophy, is pretty juvenile. It takes the idea that we can't be sure of anything but our own existence and extrapolates that only you and what you want are important. What you do doesn't matter. Other people don't matter. What you do to other people matters least of all. What reason is there not to be selfish, if you are the only thing with any weight?

You could do the same now -- you could decide that, if the world we're living in isn't real, then what we do here doesn't matter. That nothing matters. You could take this as a reason to be the worst version of yourself.

But I think that's a mistake.

Whether this is real or not, we are real. The way we treat each other, the choices we make, the parts of ourselves that we share -- those things are real. They're ours. They're part of each of us. No matter where we are, we still have the power to define who we are and what we stand for.

You'll never be sure that the life you're living, or the place you're living it, is "real." You can't be. Why not do the right thing, just in case it matters? Why not treat people well, just in case they're real? What do we lose by treating people with kindness and respect? What do we lose by being the people we'd want to be if we knew it counted?

Meaning isn't handed to us. We create it. Through our actions. Through our connections. Through our kindness. Through our courage to face uncertainty and keep going.

Every day, we make the choice to push forward. To protect each other. That's what matters. That's what makes us who we are. Whether we're living in a simulation or not, our values don't change. The way we care for one another doesn't change. We still have the power to be kind, to be brave, to stand together.

So let’s keep doing what we’ve always done—make our own meaning. That’s real enough for me.

[ It has been a couple of weeks now since the successful reset of the terminals. Now, the same voice that was heard trying to rally them all to that task, tired and thick with a Slavic accent, has come to speak over the network once again. ]

Greetings, my friends. Miller here. First of all, I wanted to thank everyone who assisted in our efforts to restore this place to its former self. If it was not for all your cooperation, I am certain things would have gone very differently. It is thanks to all of you that we are still alive.

[ He's proud, really. The change from when he first arrived in this place has been immense. ]

Which is why it is my hope that we can keep this spirit of camaraderie going. There has already been a lively discussion of the visions we encountered at the terminals. Now that it has become clear that there is truly no safe space to hide from the prying eyes of the "Council," I wish to propose a forum for us all to continue sharing information.

[ The creation of the Dark Web was an innovation, to say the least... but can one even really call that secure when the entire world they live in is simulated? Where he's concerned, it's time to be forthright. ]

Allow me to begin with this. I was summoned to the courtroom. Yes – the courtroom. I only recall the inside of the building, but I presume it's one and the same as the new structure in the city center. I have been part of this experiment for eight months now and it is my first time seeing this Jerry face to face. But I can't be the only one who, up until now, seemed to have forgotten that he even existed? So, please... I would like to hear all of your thoughts.

I don't know about all of you, but I didn't try to save that artificial intelligence because I wanted to go back to putting my head in the sand!

[ there's a lot of unsteadiness and out of focus visuals when this feed starts. it's a big indication that whoever is doing this recording is extremely unskilled with this phone device, and they're trying to get it to work right. but the individual gets it eventually (without breathing out a few swears), and it's a grown woman with red hair with white streaks and in a full bodysuit.

it seems strange for a woman to be in this attire, given the heat (on her side of the town), but maybe that's not important. the lady beams at the camera as she holds the phone out so the viewer can get a full look at her. ]

Lil' late, but Daddy used to say, "Better late than piddin' around." But howdy, folks...! My name's Rogue and I'm a mutant and new around these parts.

[ she feels a little awkward introducing herself given the events last month, but she trucks on through. ]

Couldn't introduce myself earlier 'cuz all the ruckus, but with everything simmering down, I done figured now it'd be good to say hello. But the real reason for me hollerin' is that I put myself into a bit of a tissy.

[ the feed jitters around for a few seconds, and she shows a display of food laid out on the table. rogue chuckles sheepishly as she pans over each meal, so the viewer can get a better look. ]

Every first week of the month, it'd be my turn to cook for everyone in the mansion. Been doin' it for years, and I plumb forgot I ain't at home. — When ya feedin' the X-Men, you gotta cook enough to feed a herd of buffalos. Especially durin' the holidays, but this ain't nothin' compared to Jean's. She'll spend night and day in the kitchen if ya don't tell her to quit.

[ she turns the recording back on herself, and continues to smile from ear to ear. ]

So how about you lovely folks help a gal out with some eatin'? I bet them bellies ain't full like a tick, neither. I'm —

[ before she could even finish her sentence, a chair by the table glitches out of existence, and then a creature phases in its place. the wharf rat looks around, genuinely confused at its new surroundings, and rogue too blinks over at the monster that's now behind her. ]

What in tarnation?

[ the monster spots the food and her, then immediately lunges forward, which causes the mutant to abandon the phone — leaving the viewer to only see the ceiling, and a lot of commotion of a scuffle. ]

Now hold your horses, Sugah...! — Thems people food!

[ there's a one big slam and a rumble heavy enough that the phone staggers where it lies. after that, the room is filled with silence except maybe a casual whimper from the creature. rogue hovers (yes, she can fly) in view and lowers down to grab a hold of her phone. ]

I'mma take a wild guess that ain't normal.

[ the video feed pans over to the monster lying on its back, now quiet and unconscious, with her sighing in exasperation. ]

Good day, fellow Chosen.

I request that this form be filled out as truthfully as possible for means of research. Of course, I expect some of you will have a sense of humor about it as well. I do not mind, but please try to keep it honest. It will be appreciated.

Please also expect follow up questions, but I will understand if you choose to refuse any follow up answers.

I would also like to request the services of an experienced baker. Much appreciated.

They do not look alike. The dark haired one begins to talk: ]

Hey, everyone. So it looks like we have an office here in the city now. [ He shrugs, like that's... totally normal? ] Matt and I will be opening a new firm here, called Murdock & Murdock, in the next couple of days, for anyone who needs any kind of legal services. We'll offer things like reviewing contracts, legal counseling, conflict resolution... basically we're pretty small, but between the two of us we should have just about any practice covered.

[ He doesn't gesture much as he speaks, in fact he's pretty still. This isn't trial, after all. It's a stark comparison to the redhead. ]

Also the building is crazy weird. Our office is the only thing in it? Everything else is locked but there's [ Here, he drops his voice like he's delivering the climax of a horror story at a campfire, ] no one there. [ There's a beat, and then he laughs it off. ] Pretty cool, right? Kinda gives murder vibes, but I think that's a draw to the kids these days.

Cut it out. [ The dark-haired Matt elbows the other one lightly. ] Anyway, if you have any questions about legal counseling or need to hear our credentials or anything, feel free to let us know. Office hours are going to be a little on-and-off since it's just the two of us, but you can message either of us if you need to come by the office. We're "murdock" and "mmurdock" on the network, so you'll get one of us even if you mess up the spelling.

[ ugh fiiiiine dad. The red-haired Matt manages to roll his eyes even behind those dark shades. ]

Also, I'm just saying, that when someone is accused of a crime, it's generally a good idea to speak to a lawyer. But that's just me. Here's your first piece of free advice: if the cops (or Jerry, this is really "cops" in the metaphorical sense) ask you a question you should just shut up before you further incriminate yourself without an advocate.

Right, there's that too. [ He pauses... What else? Oh, yeah. ] This is Matt, by the way. He's also Matt. It's confusing. Don't worry about it.
