( marc still isn't entirely sure where he falls on the 'is this actually real?' question he's asked himself more than a handful of times since finding himself here, since finding the parchment with his crime(s).
still: it feels real enough, and for now that's enough.
he's dressed in a suit — it's white in its entirety, with small crescent moons serving as buttons and cufflinks. it's — fine. it's an outfit that says he — before here, at least — probably spent a small fortune on dry cleaning, and begs the question of how long it's going to stay looking Like That (answer: not long).
with one leg crossed over the other, there's a breath of a pause before he speaks. this isn't how he normally does this, but then, this isn't normal by any — even his — definition of the word. )
My name is Mr. Knight. ( is it? of course not, but there's nothing to marc's demeanour that says otherwise; and for those familiar, his accent says 'chicago!' ) I'm a priest. ( certainly, by A Definition, and by that, we mean 'by marc spector's definition and no-one else's, except (maybe) an ancient egyptian moon god's'. )
At home, I ran a mission — the Midnight Mission — through which I protected my community and my people. Travellers of the night. ( a breath of a pause and he holds up a hand (gloved, white, because of course) and gestures vaguely at his surroundings. ) A change in circumstances doesn't change my duty. If there's anyone that requires help or assistance with, ( at night, because marc is Dedicated, ), no matter how strange or unusual, please don't hesitate to reach out.

You know, I actually meant to ask you if the name Mr. Knight thing was like, because your last name was Knight, or if it was a whole thing, but I can kinda see it now...
[ He's definitely a superhero. That is so cool, Peter isn't even going to call him out. Just look at that self-restraint! ]
Warrior priest with a night theme has a cool ring to it. What kind of stuff do you do? [ He pauses. ] Oh, my god. Do you fight vampires? Have you fought vampires? Werewolves?
[ He's not even be facetious, he's 100% fanboying a bit. I'm so sorry. ]
no subject
It's my name. ( punctuated by a pause, then he adds: ) Nominative determinism. ( is he being serious? is he joking? the world may never know. )
—My receptionist is a vampire. ( beat. ) But yes, I've fought vampires. And werewolves.
no subject
That is so. COOL!
[ Unfortunately he's on video so you get to see how insanely excited he is by this news. It's like you told him Christmas came early, and Santa is real. ]
Vampires and werewolves?! Holy flark, how come Earth gets all the cool stuff??

[ In theory, the Doctor doesn't particularly have anything against clergy folk. It really comes down to their personalities. But at least he seems to have neutral feelings towards Marc, at least from what he knows of him. ]
Interesting take on a priest habit. But then again, I knew a church where it was rude to wear any clothing at all, so who am I to judge? What exactly does your god preach?
no subject
( punctuated by a brief pause as marc glances down at his suit, the corners of his lips twitching into something that's almost — almost — a wry smile. )
It's appropriate for my work. ( but as for the question— ) —Are you familiar with Khonshu? Ancient Egyptian god of the moon. The protector of those that travel at night. ( also: vengeance. )
no subject
[ His eyes glint in familiarity on the other side of the holographic video. If there was a little ticker that showed his thoughts, he'd add vengeance to the end of that sentence too. ]
Of course. I spent a little bit of time with Cleopatra once, enough to learn about Ancient Egyptian gods and their reverence for cats. [ She wanted to claim him as her king and then he had dropped her off somewhere in Africa years past her time where he hoped she would be much happier than she had been at home — but details. ] But if I recall, his domain covered a little more than that. [ Ah, vengeance. ] Does your work also cover that?
[ It's hard to glean if he's judging by tone of voice alone. The accent tends to colour and skew it that way. But there's curiosity in his gaze, probably a better indicator that he's simply fact collecting and learning. ]

Why make it any more difficult than that?]
I think this is a great idea. We still don't really know what to expect here and it wouldn't make sense to assume everyone can handle themselves. I wouldn't call myself an expert or anything, but I was a guardsmen back home. Was it especially dangerous where you came from?
no subject
no subject
[She isn't sure she'd call it that, but it might not be too far off the mark. It's not as if the guards really conquered anything. They just protected the people. Took care of zeugles where they needed to.]
Makes sense, either way. Different things are dangerous to different people. [There's never a blanket address for any of that. What's dangerous to her could be absolutely trivial to someone else. Same goes for any of the others from Dahna.] I don't think any of us are going to turn down a capable hand, regardless. Knowing they have someone looking out for them will give others here a little more peace. We could all benefit from that, even if it's fleeting.

[That's really the one initial takeaway he picked up from that. At least to start with.]
You don't look like a priest.
no subject
I'm the high priest of the moon god, Khonshu. If you'd prefer, you can call me Moon Knight.
( beat. )
Is there a problem with my vestments?
no subject
The goddess of the moon is Chang'e. Who is Khonshu? What does he preside over?
[Since all gods have some domain they control. The moon is an object, but there's surely more to it than that?
...If you believe in gods.]
You look fancy, but I thought priests were supposed to be reserved a solemn. Are you looking for disciples?

[she sounds...skeptical and Done all at the same time. there's a lot that's said in the video that just makes it feel like A Lot, but the first bit she had to make a comment about.]
That's dramatic and all, but what's a priest doing running around at night? Aren't they supposed to be holed up in churches praying or something?
no subject
( 'marc' doesn't have quite the same impact, you know? also something secret identity something vigilante. )
Depends on the religion, but prayer is only one aspect of worship. ( and certainly not anything marc likes to indulge in. he barely likes to communicate with khonshu at the best of times. )
—Khonshu is the god of the moon. Daytime isn't exactly his domain.

I was working with a therapist right before all this shit went down. Do you know someone who could help me with that? I don't wanna lose track of my progress, you know.
Thanks!
no subject
this is not the type of help marc is qualified to give.
(is marc qualified to give any help? no. and yet.)
there's a little bit of time between receiving the message and marc's reply, partly due to a lack of knowing how to respond, and partly due to the fact that marc's well-aware that his own situation regarding therapy and progress is tenuous and it's probably something he ought to think about. )
no.
( in a word. soz. )
I've spoken to a doctor, ( "doctor" ), but no-one who's professed themselves to be a therapist.
you might not want to trust my judgment on that though. the last therapist I chose attempted to kill me. ( as opposed to being chosen for him and mandated on account of his Very Poor life choices. that one's been great. )

[Sounded like a gang. But didn't religious cults or armies or spies usually toss the word 'mission' into things? Shaken, not stirred, and alla that?
Midnight Mission sounded like a Sunday cartoon villain's club, but Baji thought he probably shouldn't start things off here by barreling into conversations accusin' people of being a sentai villian or whatever.]
Anyway, one problem with that, guy.

I had a congregation.
( alas, it does not occur to marc that saying 'it was a congregation' does not, in fact, make it sound better. )
