The strongest souls can retain a sense of self without being reborn.

And if they are reborn, well... Memories never fully disappear. They can be found again.

Even the strongest of spells can't hide memories forever. Then again, a god could suppress or even change a mortal's perception.

Gods could do many things. That is what makes them gods.

But are you suggesting that found memories might be divine trickery?

It is possible. There would need to be a deeper, broader reason. Most gods are not petty.

There are clues that can be followed. My memories were erased once, but I regained them.

I journeyed to the place I once lived. I encountered my mother and the memories followed.

How were they erased?

The goddess who claimed to be my stepmother tricked me into eating a pill that erased my childhood memories. I thought it best at the time since said goddess claimed I was making my mother miserable.

A crime she paid for dearly. {She earned every second of it.}
