001 (text, then video)
we're playing two truths and a lie. if you've never played, it's a game where you say three things: two that are true, one that isn't, and everyone tries to guess which one's the lie.
if you wanna go hard mode, do it with the camera on.
[ the "camera" comes on a moment later to Reno's grinning face. ]
I'll go first!
One: I've got a license for just about anything that flies, and I'm a certified flight instructor.
Two: I've had the same job since I was twenty-two.
Three: I don't have a favorite color.
[ His poker face is immaculate; there are no tells, just his smirk and his unflinching eye contact with the camera. Good luck with your guess. ]
( this is an open post, so feel free to threadjack and play this silly game amongst yourselves. i only provide drunken party entertainment here apparently. )

Text, then video
[The video comes on to show Mlynar, with deep shadows under his eyes. It's been a busy past while.]
Based on this first impression, I'll guess the second. You don't strike me as the kind to stay tied down for very long. Now, as for mine...
First, I've been reprimanded for cleaving a bronze statue in half during a duel.
Second, I've helped in delivering a baby without any issues.
Third, I write poetry in my free time.
video
[He's seen how strong Mlynar is firsthand— and knows the man has something of a reputation back home, from their previous discussion.]
The second is the lie, yes? The third might seem unlikely at first glance, but that alone makes me more inclined to believe it.
Re: video
[Mlynar can be seen suppressing a smile as Balthier makes his explanation. It's a rare sight, for someone who's generally so serious.]
The lie is that it was done without any issues. My mercenary partner and I came across a woman who was about to give birth on our travels, and we took her in our cart to see the local doctor. We had no idea what to do- and my boneheaded idiot of a partner tried to push it back in before I threatened to bury him for even thinking about it.

[He certainly hopes so, and he doubts Mlynar would be smiling, otherwise.]
That said, you do seem the sort who would enjoy poetry. Well-spoken, likely well-read.
no subject
[He was definitely right about well-read. Mlynar has a whole library back at the Nearl estate, though it had gone woefully unused recently due to years of overwork.]
Would you believe that poetry was what inspired me to pick up the sword as a child? I read all the epics of heroic knight-errants, and I decided that I wanted to be just like them.
...Unfortunately, there's less heroism to write about these days. But that's another matter, and nature provides my quill with enough inspiration.
no subject
[That woman was certainly well within her rights, and his amusement is rather thinly veiled.]
Quite the inspiration. You would hardly be the first to take their cues from such romantic tales— it is common enough in Ivalice, as well. Who's to say your poetry won't inspire someone else in turn?
no subject
[A wry smile appears on Młynar’s face at Balthier’s words. Unscathed, yes, but both of them now knew to fear the rage of a woman about to give birth.]
One can only hope that to be the case. My homeland of Kazimierz now sees poetry as somewhat antiquated since the influx of new technology from abroad brought new art forms like television and radio. Still, there’s something to be said for the old-fashioned ways.
no subject
You got it, and you're also weirdly kinda right about that, but not when it comes to the job. Wrong age, that's all. As for yours... huh. I dunno, you don't really look like a sword guy, but that first one's so oddly specific... poetry, though? There's a red herring here somewhere, an' it's probably not that, but I'm going with it anyway. Third one.
no subject
Hmm. I'm almost unsatisfied, it's as if I won through luck instead of deduction. Still, a win is a win, so this "sword guy" will take it.
[Mlynar's equine ears twitch as Reno guesses wrong. A strange show of satisfaction that his usual poker face can't hide.]
Wrong guess on your part though. It's the second, mostly because there were MANY issues, rather than none. My partner and I came across a woman who was about to give birth, and neither of us knew what to do as we rushed her on our cart to the local doctor. My partner even proposed trying to push the baby back in, being the muscle-brained idiot he was. Thankfully, we managed to find someone a little better equipped for the job.

Nice piece.
[ nice ears, too. he immediately barks out a laugh at the story, too entertained to even be mad he got it wrong. ]
Okay, yeah, if anyone's first impulse was just "put it back where it came from," that baby didn't stand a damn chance. You tellin' me it actually lived? Miracles really do happen.
no subject
Instead, the knight gives Reno a small salute with the blade before twirling it around with dramatic flair and sheathing it.]
If I recall correctly, the woman threatened to break off my partner's horns and place them somewhere unfortunate if he even tried. I think it may be the only time I've seen a tough and battle-hardened mercenary like him shrink in fear.
Thankfully, one *very* frantic cart ride later, we made it to the local doctor, and all went well- but it certainly made for one hell of a story.
no subject
Horns, huh? And you with the ears. Are those actually real? I thought I saw 'em move, but I know those furry little weirdos are always coming up with new shit to wear for their freaky roleplays, so you never know anymore.
no subject
A... furry? Roleplays? You'll have to forgive me, but these are things that I've never run into. But I can assure you that I've had these since the day I was born, much like all other Kuranta.
[A long, elegant horse tail sweeps from behind Mlynar's chair, as his genuine curiosity is aroused. Humans have such curious practices.]
no subject
Consider yourself lucky, then. You go around for long looking like that, it's only a matter of time 'til you do. Word of advice? You hear the word "clopping," run like hell.
[ don't google that. ]
no subject
Noted. I'll be sure to warn any of my comrades that I find here here about the dangers of clopping too. I'm still something of a newcomer, so all of this is rather new to me.
By the way, I find myself curious- you mentioned that you are a flight instructor earlier. Does that mean that you're proficient with blimps too? If we were back on Terra, I'd let you try mine- it's rare to find fellow people familiar with the craft.
[Unfortunately, Terra's technology is quite far behind Midgar's.]
voice;
Is it illegal to ask follow up questions... Probably.
Re: voice;
Once it was laudatory stanzas to recognize fallen comrades. But these days, I mostly focus on writing about the nature I find around me.

For one, I've become quite fond of the flowers that a fellow Chosen named Astralin has been growing around here. I've always had a soft spot for orchids.
Aside from that, there's something to be said about the rustic simplicity of this place and its people. It's just a simple village of people doing their best in unkind times- and seeing people come together like that is inspiring.
no subject
People are pretty inspiring, too. Does that mean that one's true, then?

[The knight's eyes widen as he realizes that he just gave it away. His posture becomes something of a slump, as he realizes that he's rather terrible at this game. He's far too willing to volunteer things.]
I- damn, I suppose I've given that one away. You're not wrong though, it is true. Even old soldiers can write poetry.
