Hi everyone!

Jerry gave me some homework. Can you help me with it, please? ( •̯́ ^ •̯̀)

He wants me to ask if there's such a thing as going “too far” to protect someone you love. What extent would you go to protect others? Would you physically harm them if it meant saving them from harm?

Oh, you can respond with video or call or text or whatever, that's fine! If you want to talk to each other too, that'll probably help, also.

Well, if there's not a right or wrong answer, what's your opinion, then? Like, what do your actions depend on...?

I do not.

It depends on what it is about that person that you want to protect. Perhaps it is their feelings or their very sense of self. There may be situations in which that person may be considered "hurt" that wouldn't bother you. Perhaps you want them to be able to die peacefully and protect them from a situation that would have made them suffer, for instance.

[Most people would probably be a little alarmed at that last bit. Kotone, on the other hand, just nods to herself as if that makes total sense. Death comes for everyone in the end -- it can be fought, of course, postponed sometimes, but it is inevitable. Echo's words remind her of Akinari, right at the end.]

What if you don't want them to get physically hurt, but you also don't want to hurt their feelings, either? Cause both are equally important to you?

[Yeah, ask her why she had that example ready so quickly... Echo isn't the best at knowing what is or isn't considered normal conversation.]

Then you would try to find a way to protect both, if possible, I think. If it is not, you would likely decide at that moment which to prioritize. That is one of the ways in which I believe there is no right answer in these cases.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I'd probably want to prioritize someone being physically safe. Emotions and feelings are super important, but it's way harder to die from that!

[Not impossible. She'd seen what Apathy Syndrome did to people. But there was always a chance of recovery from that, whereas if someone is killed...]

If there's no right answer, what am I supposed to tell Jerry...?

I'm not personally familiar with Jerry, but I would think the answer you just gave would suffice so long as it is yours. I personally have chosen to defend someone's heart above all else because that was important to me, so were I in your place, I might answer with that. I don't think either of us could be called "wrong".
