[ He's taken a whole day to find his bearings in these new surroundings. Get used to the technology, so to speak. When he finally chooses to address the rest of the network, he's still in his expensive clothes, the Forèstiere jacket slung around his shoulders. Misplaced.
Michel seems unusually calm about it, looking off to the side with a contemplative expression. Maybe faintly amused. ]
Taken into account that I'm currently waiting to be sentenced, I'm surprised at the lack of legal representation available to me. Am I supposed to represent myself? Don't the people who've kidnapped me know I'm the worst lawyer you could imagine?
[ A slight huff; back home, it would've been a laugh. Here, who knows?! ]
I certainly wouldn't want to be represented by me. I'll get life, for certain!
[ A wave of one hand, nonchalant or unsure, it's hard to tell on him. Finally, Michel turns his attention down on the charm, something like eye contact with the grand, big audience he can't yet make out. ]
Unrelated, but I'm wondering whether they have truffles here. As such, I also find myself wondering where I might get a dog or a pig with a nose for that kind of treasure. [ Pause. ] Truffle hunting is one of the only types of hunt I've never tried, but it seems time might be on my side for a while yet, so why not take advantage of it?
[ And like that, a wide, beaming smile forms on his lips, giving his words a cheerful edge that might not match the context entirely. ]
At my age, it's the moment or it is death. What a choice, yes!

[She says it with a smile, since it's clear that he's poking a little fun at himself.]
I haven't heard anyone yet suggest truffle-hunting as the obvious way to spend the interim, but it's an interesting thought... but there's plenty to do besides that, while you're looking for a suitable pig.

Don't trust our kind for a second! I know better than to give guarantees that I'll be a good listener, but do feel free to tell me how you spend your free time, if not truffle hunting.

[She laughs a little.]
It's something a little more hands-on than the law but probably not less messy than digging up truffles--I'm a healer at one of the clinics in town. In fact, I've started a small brigade of other healers who can ride out on horseback to emergency situations. I don't suppose you're a rider?

But not different place, same strong, human spirit rising above?
You make me sound like less of a pessimist than I am, really, but I don't know which one of us that says the most about.

look
whatever this place is, chances are it's run by some bullshit entities who can toss us all out when they get bored

Is this a process that's familiar to you?

( Though... is it better that this place is just accusing her of crimes
she absolutely didversus Jigokucho's particular brand of getting your hopes up. That's the question. )no subject
[ He considers for a moment, a long pause as he connects some dots that were more vague before she decided to be forthcoming. He's no detective, he's hardly even a lawyer, but he sees connections well enough. Sometimes too well. Sometimes he makes them up. ]
Do you have a name?
I'll go first. I'm Michel Laurent.
Until very recently, I thought I was just dreaming. A very bizarre, strange dream that I couldn't shake.

Yes, it's certainly like no court of law I've ever encountered. It hardly seems fair, though I confess that is what I'd expect from a court of law.
['Fair' rarely seemed to be a part of the equation.]
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you found something resembling what you seek out in the wilds— the truffles, that is, though there are certainly animals to be found, as well. You do seem in remarkably good spirits for someone who's just found themselves imprisoned.
