I could offer some assistance on how to properly track spending, but it will do none of us any good should the locals refuse to sell to us at all in the future.

I believe that may be best left to those with experience. However, there is no harm in learning something new, I would suggest starting small. Perhaps a garden to supplement personal needs.

I'd just started gardening back home. It was mostly cacti.... They might be alright while I'm here.
