TEXT | sender: [ unknown ]

[ around noon on friday, all tablet screens go dark at the same time, no matter what characters are doing. then, after a moment, the following text appears: ]

[ as promised, screens return to normal. however, a new message appears on the network for all to see ]

→Initialize reset simultaneously at all terminals.
→SYSTEM RESET will restore all functions to BASIC OPERATING PARAMETERS. Extraneous data and information updates will be DELETED.
→Terminal access points shown below.

[ all tablet maps are updated to include several different location pins. users will notice that there are more pins than the number of terminals, and that they don't seem to be terribly specific about exact locations. users will also note that the pins sometimes seem to fade and flicker, as if they might disappear... ]

Security clearances acquired.
Access granted.
Terminals online and accessible.

Really.

[ if a text can be at once flat and definitely not offended because they literally just tried this? he has it accomplished. ]

As my prior activities have indicated, I am available for technological inquiries within this scope. I am avilable to contact as required.

Otherwise, I have not yet decided upon a route.

Before your arrival, such inconsistencies had occurred before. Our interaction with the absence brought a nearly incalculable agony. There is no escaping the potential for failure, but there is possibility to avoid a known, painful end.

Were it possible to "stay the course," I believe most would have. Unfortunately, ignoring the issue in hopes it will amend itself have thus far proven ineffective.

I'm not saying don't deal with it
We have to deal with it
It's our responsibility

But I don't want to just kill it. We can fix it

That is not what I am suggesting.

I am not opposed to isolating it. However, to maintain its current access to the systems without further assessment is untenable.

Don't be an alien stick in the mud. Asteroid in the thruster?

I spent this whole time writing a virus to allow us to access its core programming. I'm planning to make a backup before we reset... and add a few things.

I fail to understand how either object in positions of inconvenience relate to my person.

[ that's a lie. he does. let him sulk for a second. ]

I had... Considered archiving it and its associated data after calculating current standings. Were it possible to excise it from our current environs and maintain its isolation after resetting, I believe our chances of success would improve quite appreciably.

[ don't ask him about the percentage of increase. he has that calculated. ]

What do you intend to add?

Do you need me to use smaller words, Commander? Fewer metaphors?

I think they would decrease significantly. That AI is what's keeping our consciousnesses afloat and our environment rational. When it's working, anyway. I don't want to chain her, I want to help her grow a little.

I intend to skim through the code base before we do a restore to make sure there's nothing lethal or otherwise untoward hiding -- it'd be great to have you and the STEM club help with that -- and then I want to make sure she can keep talking to us after reset. Maybe even add something to free her from her non-interference schtick if I can, assuming her primary function really is to protect us as she says it is.

I don't really get it, is this what's causing things to disappear and move?
And what does resetting do?
