[the video starts with the camera pointed at the ground, before slowly panning up with the slightly unsteady hand of someone who isn't used to such technology. the pan up reveals a modest stone building, a yard fenced in by nice tall metal fences, and...dogs. they're playing in the yard so it's a little hard to count, but there must be twelve or fifteen of them. small dogs, large dogs, if you can imagine a dog one of them is probably cavorting around the yard. after simply observing the dogs for a moment, the handler of the phone begins to speak.]

As you can see, since Aldrip expanded there's been a noted increase in stray dogs.

[the camera wobbles as a particularly enthusiastic dog jumps on kakashi, showing off how short he is and also possibly how strong he is as he easily pushes the dog away.]

I've been housing and feeding all I can but I'm running out of room. Any responsible individuals who might like to care for a dog themselves can feel free to come by...I'll even send you off with some dog food.

[he fumbles with the phone a bit before there's a DING and the address of kakashi's house appears on the bottom of the screen. god knows how he figured out how to do THAT.]

Several of them were under the weather last month, when things got weird.

They seem to have mostly recovered. I'd like to find a vet though, to get them up to date with shots and have them fixed if nothing else.

Yes, I... I imagine that was very distressing for them. I'm glad that they're doing better now.

I would be happy to take a look at them--I helped with animals when I had to, and I know the veterinary that serves the farmers outside of the city, in case of anything serious. [...] What do you mean by 'fixed,' though?

Oh! I see. [.......] Is that usual?

Yeah, it helps to keep the stray population down. There's not enough people taking in the dogs we have already, much less when they have puppies. Also, it can lower aggression in some dogs.

[he's just a fount of knowledge on the subject, apparently.]

Ah, that does make sense. [It's true in cows, so it makes sense it would be true in other animals too.] I'm used to stray dogs and cats simply being a fact of life. I should have realized that if surgery is safer for people in many places, it's safer for animals too.

Er, do people really get that kind of surgery?...

Oh! No, no, not that surgery. I meant surgery in general. In my homeland, we didn't yet have the tools to understand exactly what causes disease and infection. So it was always dangerous, and something you would only do if you would die without it.

Oh, I see. The medicine here does seem quite modern.

I used to think that what I knew about medicine was modern until I came here. I was shocked at how much more people knew... just as a matter of basic knowledge, without any special training. Did you know that the human body has two hundred and six bones in it?

No, but then again I'm no mednin. That's the kind of thing my teammate would know.

[knowing her, she could probably recite the names of all the bones, too.]

I only know a little first-aid. That's considered modern where I'm from, knowing the basics like how to stop bleeding or splint a break. There's been a big push for medicine to become more mainstream.

Those are critical skills for anyone to have. Even if you aren't a warrior, accidents can happen anywhere, anytime.

Medicine becoming common knowledge is something I'm all for--it shouldn't be restricted only to those who have the time and position for dedicated tutoring.

Recently, there's been an initiative to have a mednin included in every team cell. Apparently that really lowers the casualty rate for missions.

I don't know about anything like that here. But it seems like decent medical care is available.

I would imagine so. When real healers aren't part of an army, the rate of casualties is horrific. [She has seen that from some of the enemies she fought as part of Sigurd's army.] I hope that initiative is taken up with a will--war is a terrible thing, but it can be made less so.

I do my best to help people here stay well and recover well after an emergency. [She smiles.] And if you want to improve your first-aid skills, well, I'm always willing to teach someone.

It couldn't hurt to learn more first aid. But I wouldn't want to cut into your busy schedule.

Don't worry about that. I like teaching people, and the more of us know how to do first aid, the less of a strain it is when emergencies happen.
