[the video starts with the camera pointed at the ground, before slowly panning up with the slightly unsteady hand of someone who isn't used to such technology. the pan up reveals a modest stone building, a yard fenced in by nice tall metal fences, and...dogs. they're playing in the yard so it's a little hard to count, but there must be twelve or fifteen of them. small dogs, large dogs, if you can imagine a dog one of them is probably cavorting around the yard. after simply observing the dogs for a moment, the handler of the phone begins to speak.]


As you can see, since Aldrip expanded there's been a noted increase in stray dogs.

[the camera wobbles as a particularly enthusiastic dog jumps on kakashi, showing off how short he is and also possibly how strong he is as he easily pushes the dog away.]

I've been housing and feeding all I can but I'm running out of room. Any responsible individuals who might like to care for a dog themselves can feel free to come by...I'll even send you off with some dog food.

[he fumbles with the phone a bit before there's a DING and the address of kakashi's house appears on the bottom of the screen. god knows how he figured out how to do THAT.]

Damn, you collected a lot. You need anything for them? I bet we could get together some stuff for them to chew on and stock you with enough food.

Ahh, that would be really helpful actually. I've got a hook up for dog food - [but it involves wearing a stupid dog suit and he hates it - ] - but they could always do with more toys. It would be good if you wanted to come exercise some of them too. The yard is pretty big but long walks are good for dogs.

[he sounds less rigid than he did in the initial video, probably because shinjiro started with offers of help. also he is very enthusiastic about dogs in general.]

--Yeah, they can probably get all the exercise they need playing with each other, but they'll need one on one time and new places to sniff, too. Any time work best, or should I just walk up and check a dog out for an hour?

I can touch base with one of the butchers in town, see if they'd cut a deal on bones.

To take a dog? No. But there are financial responsibilities associated with owning a dog. Food, toys, grooming.

How much? I've never owned a dog before.

Food and grooming will most likely be monthly expenses. You can buy food in bulk for a decent price from vendors in the city. As for toys, you'll have to get to know the dog and how quickly they chew through them. They should always have toys to stimulate them.

Not only that, but you will have to devote time each day to walking them and playing with them. A dog is a big responsibility.

[ Jim shouldn't. He shouldn't. But he's such a sucker, and there are so many dogs. He never had a dog of his own, but he remembers playing with farm dogs out in the cornfields, and he remembers wanting a dog.

He shouldn't, but his impulse control is net zero. ]

I can only take one off your hands, but I'm happy to help. Do you have any with a gentle temperament, like a goldie? My roommate might not appreciate a high energy dog.

[ A gentle dog is probably his best bet for getting it past Spock. As if Jim's puppy dog eyes combined with the dog wouldn't be enough. ]

[ Kakashi wasn't kidding about the number of dogs. When Jim arrives, it appears to be even more than the video had shown. Were they multiplying?

He brought a leash, unsure if there would be one there; he figured he could go out for dog food and toys later, presuming he took one, and leave the leash there if not who is he kidding, it'll be an exercise in restraint not to take five. Jim also has a bag of dog treats in hand, an offering to whatever supplies Kakashi has. ]

You could be running a shelter at this rate. [ Jim gives a low whistle, watching three of the dogs chase after each other in a circle as he approaches. ] There isn't one, I guess, in town?

[kakashi greets him at the gate, appreciating his timeliness.]

Judging by the number of dogs I've pulled off the street, I'm guessing not.

[there's not one he's found, anyway.]

You're after a gentle one, right? Come in, I'll introduce you.

[he opens the gate, waving jim through.]

[ Jim's not quite used to the fact that this place seems to be full of teenagers, but he gives no indication of this; he simply follows Kakashi through the gate, looking around at the setup.

All. The. Dogs.

Dogs overfloweth, that's for sure, and it's only logical for them to house at least one, right? Sure. That's Jim's story and he's sticking to it.

Several of the animals run right up to him, circling his legs, perfectly friendly, if a little overstimulated. Jim laughs and gently dodges, grinning as they make their way through the yard. ]

Yeah, gentle would be good. Not quite as high energy. [ And as funny an image as it makes, Spock confronted with a small, yappy-type dog, he's sure he can't push his luck that far. ] I'm Jim, by the way. Jim Kirk.

I brought this, too. [ Jim offers the bag of treats with a half-shrug. ] Let me know if I can help out with dog food, or anything.

[ He'd maybe been winning money at poker, in the interim, but if it was for a good cause, hey. ]

Oh my, that's certainly a lot!

How is their health? Strays can pick up a lot of things living out on their own.

Several of them were under the weather last month, when things got weird.

[cursed organs scattered around...the usual.]

They seem to have mostly recovered. I'd like to find a vet though, to get them up to date with shots and have them fixed if nothing else.

Yes, I... I imagine that was very distressing for them. I'm glad that they're doing better now.

I would be happy to take a look at them--I helped with animals when I had to, and I know the veterinary that serves the farmers outside of the city, in case of anything serious. [...] What do you mean by 'fixed,' though?

You know, uh. Spaying and neutering?

I could always use a hand with keeping them exercised. They get plenty of play in the yard, but it's good for them to get out for walks too.

[Playing with dogs would probably be fun. Or at least taking them for walks could help him learn the layout of the city that was still eluding him a bit.]
