[Yu is all business as soon as the feed starts, his expression and tone very measured.]
It seems I'm not the only one who was contacted for "sentencing," so I'd like to pool our information. I was contacted by someone named "Jerry" and told to go to City Hall. How many others received a similar order? I know it wasn't everyone, but maybe we can get an accurate count. Were you asked to meet with the same person, or someone different?
If anyone else feels comfortable sharing what their "sentence" was, that could also be useful. Mine was to investigate people I'm close to for evidence of crimes.
[His tone is carefully neutral, but he doesn't seem thrilled about that. Loyalty... he still doesn't see any way to consider it a crime. Now he's being asked to atone for something like that?
... Anyway. What else does he need to add? He thinks about it for a moment, frowning softly, and then adds:]
Last thing. Does anyone who was summoned remember what happened inside the building?

video;
Shit, I didn't get anything like that. They didn't mess you up or anything at City Hall, right? [He considers the idea of blasting the place if it hurt his friends, but uh, probably not the best idea. Scott recognizes that much.]
I know you don't remember, but you'd still the after effects and everything.
no subject
No harm done. I'm glad you weren't involved, Scott. So far, it seems like fewer people were summoned than not...I can't tell yet whether that's a good or a bad thing.
no subject
Guess I should be ready in case Jerry decides to pop by. [Scott isn't really looking forward to it, but it seems like none of them have a choice about it. Maybe he should resist, but...]
Did he mention what happens if you uh, 'fail' your sentencing?
no subject
[A grim smile.]
No, he didn't. But I'm sure there must be some kind of consequence.
no subject
It's just going to go in the Stuff to Worry about Later box.]
We have to work on your sentence man. [Yes, 'we.']
no subject
It's a little outside the scope of club activities, don't you think?
[But he's not going to say no to the sentiment, either.]
no subject
[Huh, maybe he should ask the other club members for help too? But if Yu has to investigate his friends and everything... maybe it's best not to involve everyone.]
no subject
[Really, it's kind of strange to have someone else stepping up in a take-charge sort of way, for once. Not that he minds, but it's very different.]
So, any skeletons hiding in the closet, mister Club President? Are you secretly a criminal mastermind?
no subject
[But man, this is a pretty shitty sentence Yu is dealing with, huh? It's either rat out one of your friends or probably face something really terrible yourself. Maybe they should just all band together and fight Jerry or whoever as one, but uh, that could be a pretty bad idea.
Even if Dazai should be able to limit anyone's abilities, but hm. How do you even plan something like this out?
Scott actually frowns a little, taking this a bit more seriously.]
So, you have to turn someone in, right? For crimes and crap. [...] What if I do some minor vandalism? Like it's something pretty minor, but considered a crime. And I have to scrub some building for a couple of weeks, that's not too bad.
no subject
I'm sorry, but I have to refuse. We have no idea what could happen to someone I turn in. It could be light...it could not. I'm not going to put any of my friends at risk like that.
[As much as he appreciates the offer --and he does, there's plenty of gratitude in his expression-- there's just too much they don't know about the situation.]
no subject
And we have no idea what can happen to you if you don't complete the sentence.
no subject
I know. But I don't want to put anyone else at risk on my behalf.
no subject
Yeah, and I don't want you to just surrender yourself either. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only guy that'd kick your ass for that.
[When two stubborn self-sacrificing idiots meet--]
no subject
I'm not planning to surrender. I'm going to plead my case, so to speak.
You can 'kick my ass' after.
[A wry smile.]
no subject
So, you're gonna go to Jerry or the council or whatever, and say 'spare my ass even though I brought nothing?' [He's so impressed.]
no subject
More like explaining that loyalty isn't even a crime to begin with. Besides, none of my friends have done anything so terrible that they should be punished in my place.
no subject
I mean, it is a pretty stupid crime to get hit with. [Isn't loyalty normally a good quality and shit? Maybe not if you're like, an evil henchman that works for the Emperor, but Yu isn't... that. Obviously.
Scott bites his lip for a moment, as if trying to decide on something. Does. Does he tell Yu about what he did a few months ago? He really doesn't want to be punished, in fact it's really scary, but... he should face consequences for what he did, right? He's gotten off scot-free this entire time and...
He sucks in a breath.]
H-How do you know that for sure? Maybe one of your friends have done something terrible. [Like him.]
no subject
Yu looks grateful for a second, but then pauses at the hesitation on Scott's face. The dots connect a little bit, but not in a really meaningful way -- not when he doesn't know the truth of what Scott is talking about.
...
He tries to choose his words carefully...]
If that was the case...I wonder if it would have really been as bad as they think.
[He's watching for a reaction.]
no subject
Murder is generally pretty inexcusable.
[It was self-defense and the guys were Infected, but... Dazai's said that murder is murder. That it still counts. Scott's stomach quells, but there's no taking back what he said.]
no subject
The way Scott says that is almost damning, laced with guilt, quiet under the weight of it. For his part, Yu's expression is neutral -- partially with intention. Who it's he to judge anyone for their crimes? That's another part of what bothers him so much about all of this. Why put this task in the hands of a high schooler?
... There's really only one thing he can start with, here.]
What happened?
no subject
It was a while back, during the desert expedition.
[He can't remember if Yu was around doing that time, he doesn't think so? But the details that actually matter haven't actually been admitted yet, as Scott takes in another breath, trying to situate himself and say more. Dazai acts like murder is no big deal, but he can't be like him, he doesn't think he wants to, even though he still looks up to him as a mentor of sorts.]
But there were these guys-- Infected, that tried to attack me. [Although it makes it sound like it's their fault and that's not what he wants either--] T-they didn't know what they were doing, I don't think it was their fault. I mean, they helped build houses and even that entire casino later on. But I... I still killed a couple of them.
no subject
...
It's another second before he figures out how to phrase the question that immediately comes to mind.]
Did you know what they were, at the time?
no subject
[That's a pretty stupid answer, but it's not like he's trying to skirt responsibility now after saying this much. He remembers being a little scared of them, and then really frightened when they started to attack him.
Scott frowns again at the camera, almost grimacing.]
Does it matter?
no subject
... I fought monsters every day, for a while. Some that looked vaguely human. If those monsters had turned out to be people, like you described... I'd probably feel exactly the same way you do.
[It was hard enough just fighting their Shadows, sometimes. Still... is that sort of thing, that "crime," worth sacrificing someone's safety? Is it worth the trade off between the two of them?
... he's known the answer to that from the start.]
I understand your guilt. I'm sorry I can't make that easier for you. But I also don't think it's right to exchange my safety for yours... not because of something like that.
no subject
They looked human from the start. [...] Mostly.
[Some markings on their skin and everything, but not really different from when some of the Chosen had those symbols too. He should've realized it then and there but. He panicked. And can't take it back.
Scott almost finds himself
broodinglost in his thoughts again, until Yu speaks and sigh. This guy!! Ugh, maybe he should've said that he killed them with manic glee and had zero regrets.]You really are a stubborn ass. [He kind of respects it though, even if Scott's annoyed.] If I get called by Jerry next time, you don't get to sacrifice yourself for me.
