I want to start with a brief apology for this being an anonymous post. But there are several factors that are, in a way, forcing my hand.

Despite that, I will answer anything you inquire with sincerity and knowledge I am privy to. Answering this anonymously in return is acceptable.

My question is, perhaps for many people here, quite simple: What is magic to you?

The follow-up questions that you can answer, but don't have to, are: How do you control it? Do you have a trigger for it, like heightened emotions and danger-sense? Or does it come from understanding and logic? Did you learn it? Or were you born into it?


I appreciate any and all insights you can provide me with.

Magic is a discipline alongside the other sciences
Spellwork and so on are taught as any other subject for those interested
where I am from
Most of it is written work
Quality and skill come from a steady hand

My parents were magicians
I also studied
I am quite good at it

Magic is being taught in your world? Are everyone capable of using it?
Do you not need some magical predisposition for it?

My mother wasn't a magician so I wonder from where my powers came.

No
Anyone with the dedication to study can learn
Of course some are more innately talented than others but that is true of anything
Like a sport or an instrument

That said the type of magic we are discussing may be different
Likely it is
I doubt the small magics of my world are as powerful of some varieties known here

Oh like a better understanding of the pattern and easier time learning it?
I understand.

There is that sort of magic in my world as well
But I am one of those born with it, with no clue how it came to it.
I was never interested in it, nor did anything in my life implicate I would be able to use magic.

An ability to memorize and accurately reproduce the applicable characters is paramount
An eager mind and a steady hand as they say

I am not sure innate abilities consider one's interest

It sounds like one needs to put away a lot of time and dedication for such a craft.
I can think of a few people I know who would love that.


Not at all.
My family has always been in military
Officers and Generals
Holding a decent amount of soldiers under their own wing as well
Until me, as far as I know, everyone has been a martial artist

Unfortunately I am a dreadful teacher and no one else from my home has joined me here

Interesting circumstances though
How did you discover your magic

That is alright
I'm sure my magic cannot be practiced through books as there are no records of it
At least I didn't find any back home yet.

I was pushed into a corner multiple times
and my magic had reacted in defense of me without my knowledge plenty of times
And at one point my life was threatened, the aggressor had cornered me and my magic not only shielded me but also I could use it to retaliate.

Of course, I was running high on fear and urgency then, so I cannot say I know how to control it.

What methods have you tried to use it since
?

It would be a shame to only access your abilities under duress

I've tried moving objects, which was very complicated. I figured out that my magic was not meant for such a thing.
But more for shielding and rebuffing other attacks (physical or otherwise)

I suppose you could ask for partners to practice fighting
Or at least to
throw a ball at you or similar
