[ That's just the way she likes it. The plan is going to be complicated and open to adjustment on the fly, and she'd rather not have to explain herself over and over again. ]

Perfect. Could you let Miller know what you find? I'm going to handle the tech side and he'll be organizing teams.
laserguy: (look i know i'm an ass)

[personal profile] laserguy 2024-09-18 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, I'll get in contact with him. Looks like he's already started on organizing, so I'll contribute what I got.

[SOME TIME LATER...]

Hey, just letting you know. Morph and Rogue are going to help out. I know what's been said, but they've changed their minds. I just don't want anyone to get into unnecessary conflicts out there.

[ There's similarly a longish delay before Root responds, because she's busy hacking into private conversations and following the discourse to judge how credible this turnabout is. Between the public conversation where he persuaded them and the private follow-ups where they backed up what they said in public, she's actually pretty persuaded.

She has reservations, but... she's not going to pretend people can't fall in line. That's what she does all the time with the Machine. And frankly, she respects his honesty. Still, Root's default is to take things cavalierly while she's still making up her mind. ]

You got elected party leader, huh?
laserguy: (beginnings)

[personal profile] laserguy 2024-09-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Scott finds himself scratching his cheek hearing her question, almost embarrassed but... guess that's pretty much what happened. He's probably relying on a lot of good will on the Scott from their timeline, but he's going to use it in this situation. Plus, he does want to prove himself, do his best. He really doesn't want to let anyone down and god's that anxiety inducing--]

Y-yeah. [Despite that speech and everything, a part of him really is nervous still, but he's trying to shove that down. He can't be that way in front of others, especially if they're looking up to him for leadership.]

I mean, yeah, that's what I'm needed for. They trust me and I trust them.

[...] If something happens, I'll take responsibility, but they're with us and they'll do their damn hardest to make all of this work out.

That's sweet.

[ It genuinely is sweet; she doesn't sound mocking, just... maybe jaded. A little skeptical. Root knows it's possible for others to have true bonds like this, it just isn't something that usually touches her, isn't something she participates in. She's been-- trying, lately, with Harold and his crew of helper monkeys-- but it has a long way to go. And she's not about to denigrate a teenager for taking this position, not given what she was doing at that age. (Making evil men pay, and pay--) ]

You trust them that much? With something that might mean we all cease existing?

[ Root won't couch her words; she's testing his mettle, seeing if he's thought this through. They can't take risks with this operation. ]

[personal profile] laserguy 2024-09-19 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[The lack of mockery in her voice genuinely helps as his footing in all this hasn't been fully cemented yet. Sure, he would've gone through with this still, but he can't deny that it's nice having acceptance from others too.

...

That sure is a loaded question though. The thought's occurred to him before, of course it has, especially since he's read the discussion and the heated debates his teammates had with others. For a while, before he reached out to Rogue, Scott didn't think they'd listen to anyone, but... all of that changed when she asked him for help. Thinking about it even now, it still shakes him. The... power? Responsibility?? To be able to ask others to fight for him-- for something he believes in, even if they don't.]

I do. [Comes the reply, quiet at first, before regaining some momentum.] I'm sure that they still have some doubts about this mission, but they said they were going to suit up for me. I believe in that. They're-- we're X-Men, I know they won't go back on their word.

[ Root understands loyalty, even if she doesn't personally participate in it often. Really it's just the Machine, and to a lesser extent Harold and now Shaw. But loyalty looks different for Root, and she knows it. ]

Okay. I'll take your word for it. [ She can see he understands the seriousness of the situation -- he passed the tacit test -- so she lightens up. If things go wrong she won't forget it, but everyone deserves a chance. ]

Even if X-Men sounds like a boy band I wouldn't want to join.
laserguy: (okay not bad)

[personal profile] laserguy 2024-09-20 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's a relieved little noise that passes through Scott's end when Root says that she believes him. Guess he not only asked Morph and Rogue to trust him, but her too and this is the first time they've ever talked. It feels like a lot, but he knows that his teammates are going to do their best. He doesn't have to be worried about that.

Hopefully this will help with mitigating any possible misunderstandings out there. They can't afford stuff like that right now.]

A boy band? [A confused note enters Scott's voice, making the teen sound a little younger once more.] Like the Beatles?
computation: (121)

[personal profile] computation 2024-09-22 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The Beatles is what you think of? What year are you from?

[ This is a deathly serious operation, but Root is firmly of the opinion that sometimes moments of humor are all that keep you human during times like these. ]
laserguy: (new day)

[personal profile] laserguy 2024-09-22 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Definitely a change in conversation, but honestly, Scott doesn't find himself minding it. They got the serious stuff down and just a couple minutes of this can't hurt.]

Uh, 1983. I'm guessing this is a future thing. [He's learned a lot of things at this point, but 'boy bands' haven't really come up before.]
computation: (058)

[personal profile] computation 2024-09-24 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, you haven't gotten to experience the wonders of the 90s yet, and I can't link you to examples. Darn.

[ Humorous interlude aside, there was a real intent beneath her joke. ]

I'll be more direct: what are the X-Men? [ She's absolutely going to do her hacking and reading up on it, but she's curious what Scott's explanation will be given the weight he put on the term earlier. ]
laserguy: (big ol' visor)

[personal profile] laserguy 2024-09-24 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like this is something I'm either going to love or hate.

[Maybe Kotone has a song or two in her MP3 player?? He'll have to ask her later, if he remembers, because it's back to something a little more serious. 'What are the X-Men?' Honestly, a fair question, and one that Scott shouldn't know about, given where he is in the time line. Maybe the X-Men won't even exist back home, because things are peaceful. His world just sounds so different compared to the other mutants.

But...

What did Quentin say? Kurt?? Morph and Rogue as well. Or maybe, more importantly, what does the X-Men mean to him??]

We're a group of mutants. [That's the easy answer. Does he include 'superhero?' Scott will avoid that for the time being.] Mutants that use their powers to help others, whether it's other mutants, humans, or in this case, AI. We help others because that's what we're supposed to do.

[...]

Improbable hail marys to save the world is what we do.

[Stealing from Quentin don't @ him.]

[personal profile] computation 2024-09-27 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, I really couldn't say, Scotty. I don't know your taste.

[ She's definitely just perpetuating the joke to be lightly annoying now, but it is a coping mechanism for her in itself. Root is constantly buried in life or death situations (most of her own making) and retaining some normalcy helps her function.

They are not using the word mutant the way she thinks of it, but Root's not about to argue semantics. ]

Sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon, but convenient for our current situation. The world need saving that often? [ She herself was interrupted in the midst of trying to save the world, but it was more metaphorical than literal. ]
laserguy: (so the plan is)

[personal profile] laserguy 2024-09-27 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Saturday morning cartoon........ she's not wrong though.]

Y-yeah? Kind of. [...] My world isn't as chaotic as theirs, but people try to either destroy the world or harm mutants and humans on a regular basis.

[Quentin has definitely bitched to him about it before.] And yeah, I definitely just mentioned that we're from different timelines. It doesn't change the fact that we're still X-Men.

[Maybe he's accepted that for himself, after worrying about it for so long. He compared himself to other Scotts for months now, maybe he finally figured to pull his head out of his ass.]
computation: (020)

[personal profile] computation 2024-09-29 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That sure is some Saturday morning cartoon nonsense! But okay, it's clearly real to him and Root isn't going to argue. Apparently that's his life. It's convenient to talk to someone that can give firsthand confirmation of people knowing each other but having different versions of events in their history, which adds to her thinking that reality and simulation are subjective concepts to start with. She hadn't doubted the reports, but it's nice to run into herself. ]

Okay. Well, as long as you keep your band together and you don't break up before the tour, it's fine with me.

[ Brightly: ] Thanks for asking! I need to get back to work now.
