( ooc: octal conversion for characters who might be able to decode it. spock was cleared to use ciphers and their ilk without immediate translation, so let's get after it(????). anyway: hover to see what he's saying! )

[ shockingly, he recognizes that it’s a cipher immediately — mostly because this shit’s normal in space. ]

Were it my prerogative to transmit a discreet message, I would not have utilized the provided computational devices. Moreover, I would not have used such an insecure cipher.
[ is he going to tell him what he's doing? no. but, he'll lead him to it. he doesn't reward without work. ]
I presume you are able to read this message as is?

yep. not uncommon for ppl to use this one up in space. specially researchers. soooo annoying.
i'm not all that good at this stuff but i thiiiiink ur trying to figure out if it translates immediately. or maybe ur just one of those nerds who fucks around for fun
[ he is literally a future researcher but still! geek. ]

[ does he actually not know? no. he is just playing funny vulcan games. or, really, he's just being a little shit. ]
Certainly not. While it is an adequate strategy to implement when others are no longer accessible, they are hardly ideal. As you may well know, computers aid a great deal in making any typical ciphers readily translatable with the proper software and protocols.
[ translation: you should probably learn the atypical ones even if you hate it. it'd serve you well. source: bro, trust me. and he's tempted to push his funny little vulcan games, but he'll let the colorful language slide. ]
As you have surmised, it is indeed largely the former.

talkin to a fellow jokester here i c
[ game (little shit) recognizes game (fellow little shit). ]
yea most tech is advanced enough that it can root out keys and algorithms easy peasy. mayb it's time 2 go back to ancient stenography 😭
[ he catches his drift; it's something his parents would advise. for as much as he dislikes them, it's the correct decision -- they were many things, but stupid wasn't one of them. ]
u from space 2? most of the peeps here are earthlings. but nobody's been on earth in foreverrrr where i'm from.

[ the effect is lost a bit over text, but he can probably hear the little glimmer of amusement in it even so. ]
Most curious. For myself, Earth remains densely populated, though much of its current environment and recovery is attributable to its unified governmental system and its staunch commitment to continued cooperation.
If I might ask: what was the determining factor for its abandonment?
[ side-stepping whether or not he's from space aside, he can at least indicate that. he suspects that earth may have never recovered from the third global conflict in this universe or some associated fall-out, but better to ask. ]

[ that lore bomb, though. now that's something. sha-ming blinks at his screen for a moment. ]
it became unhabitable somewhere around the early 3000s. life there wasn't rlly sustainable anymore. the human population was at serious risk so they sent out a crew into space in the hopes that they could colonize other planets. u kno how it goes. it's what humans do.
it's not completely abandoned. one of my crewmates is from there even. but most of us live across the galaxy. some planets are more of shitholes than others.
u trying to save earth in ur own universe or what?
