Sometimes. Sometimes they can do some very real damage and not be hurt in return without certain talismans, abilities, or magic.
A couple of times some friends of mine have been possessed or they've lured me and my family into a trap.
Generally, not always, and I refuse to assume. I've met plenty here who are criminals only because some paper from some mysterious person says so.
